With a severe hangover after partying at the Rencontres d’Arles, I had a breakfast appointment with Joel Meyerowitz at his hotel. After 5 minutes of conversation I totally forgot about my headache. Anders Petersen – British Journal of Photography

The first time I met Anders Petersen was, appropriately enough, in a bar in the Bastille district of Paris. He was leaning against the bar and, after introductions told me that ‘it is what it is.’ Having had a few glasses of Cote du Rhone I was a little perplexed, but somehow understood what he…

Antoine d’Agata – British Journal of Photography

My writing contributions to the British Journal of Photography began a few years ago but photographing the portraits of the photographers I was writing about began when I was living in Marseille in 2013 and staying for a time at the now defunct Atelier de Visu, where Antoine d’Agata had just taught a workshop. Daisuke Yokota – British Journal of Photography

Daisuke Yokota is a radical photographer who is literally burning with energy. For the April issue of the British Journal of Photography I had the pleasure to write about him and shoot his portrait.

Christian Caujolle – British Journal of Photography

In November, during Paris Photo I had breakfast with the curator, writer and founder of Agence and Galerie VU, Christian Caujolle. I also managed to interview and photograph him for the December issue of the British Journal of Photography.

Roger Ballen – British Journal of Photography

This is a portrait I did of Roger Ballen, in the medina of Fez. Morocco, when I organised a 1000 Words workshop in 2012. And in 2017, for the January issue of the British Journal of Photography, it worked for an interview I did with him.

Not so very long ago I was totally naked in a freezing Swedish lake photographing a completely naked JH Engström. As he shivered, floating, barely on the surface of the rugged water, his wild eyes fixated and penetrated the lens. Needless to say it was an intense experience and the portrait radiates this.
